We also support efforts to identify all Indigenous children who are buried at similar sites across the country. This tragedy galvanizes our work to create an equitable profession by continuing to learn, educate and make changes that will impact marginalized communities, including Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr. Jennifer Ward\u2019s dream of opening a chiropractic clinic was met with\u00a0tremendous\u00a0doubt. She\u00a0was\u00a0denied\u00a0by financial institutions. She was\u00a0told she would fail\u00a0and that\u00a0no one would pay for her care. Why the pessimism? Dr. Ward is an Indigenous\u00a0chiropractor\u00a0who\u00a0sought\u00a0to open a clinic on a First Nations reserve.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p id=\"action-plan\">Eighteen\u00a0years later,\u00a0her clinic on the\u00a0Opaskwayak\u00a0Cree Nation in Manitoba\u00a0is thriving.\u00a0She sees patients from\u00a0many\u00a0reserves in the area\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0neighbouring town\u00a0across the bridge, The Pas, a predominantly white community.\u00a0Although we do not\u00a0know how\u00a0many chiropractors operate on reserves, Dr. Ward believes she is one of the few. That\u2019s part of a larger problem\u00a0facing\u00a0the profession:\u00a0we have no information about the diversity of Canadian chiropractors, something <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/chiro2024.thewire.dev\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the CCA is addressing<\/a><\/strong> with its recent research survey on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion\u00a0(DEI)\u00a0in Chiropractic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI am the only practitioner left in the area and all patients come to see me,\u201d Dr. Ward says.\u00a0\u201cI feel that I have built a bridge between the two communities.\u00a0Racism runs deep here and there\u00a0was\u00a0a long history of tension.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had\u00a0a few\u00a0patients\u00a0from town\u00a0say they would never support an\u00a0\u2018Indian\u2019\u00a0business. They justify their beliefs and say, \u2018Well, you\u2019re different. You\u2019re not like the\u00a0\u2018Indians\u2019\u00a0up here,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cI tell them that I am exactly like \u2018the Indians up here.\u2019 I grew up in a lot of the same ways: on reserve\u00a0with the same socioeconomic issues and that I was exposed to racism as a child with similar comments.\u00a0I tell them that their comments are hurtful and that I will treat them in the hopes that, in time they will change their opinion towards Indigenous people.\u00a0 It has taken years of reconciliation, but over time there has been a bridge, so to speak, built between the two communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr. Ward\u2019s mission is to\u00a0bring better\u00a0musculoskeletal\u00a0care to marginalized, underserviced\u00a0communities in\u00a0northern\u00a0Canada, and is working\u00a0with researchers at World Spine Care and the Global Spine Initiative to advance this goal.\u00a0She\u00a0grew\u00a0up in the\u00a0Mi\u2019Kmaq\u00a0First Nation community of\u00a0Natoaganeg\u00a0in New\u00a0Brunswick\u00a0and\u00a0understands\u00a0the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, which include\u00a0poor\u00a0health outcomes, barriers to care\u00a0and systemic racism.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important for Indigenous representation in chiropractic \u2013 to have one of our own, listening to us, treating us with respect and valuing our cultural differences \u2013 all the while providing quality chiropractic treatment, acupuncture and also information on overall wellness and nutrition. Dr. Ward is a role model to many,\u201d says patient Cheryll Constant. \u201cWith her treatments, I have a better quality of life and avoided surgery and medications.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr. Ward never heard of a chiropractor\u00a0until\u00a0she was in university.\u00a0Growing up\u00a0on a reserve, there\u00a0were no chiropractors in her community.\u00a0Her family had no\u00a0extra finances to seek care when they had pain.\u00a0Despite\u00a0the many\u00a0road blocks\u00a0that systemic racism had put in place, including\u00a0a lack of Indigenous representation in schools\u00a0and\u00a0the media, she reached her goal of becoming a doctor. But she says that representation early on would\u00a0have\u00a0made a huge difference.\u00a0In 2014, Dr. Ward was selected as a role model\u00a0to inspire\u00a0youth across Manitoba to \u201cBecome a Healer\u201d and work toward a career in healthcare. Recently,\u00a0a 14-year-old girl living in\u00a0Opaskwayak\u00a0entered\u00a0Dr. Ward\u2019s\u00a0clinic, seeking a solution for low back pain.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis touched my heart,\u201d she says. \u201cI told her that I was proud that her and her friends knew what a chiropractor is, and that she would spend what she had to come in. I ended up giving her a free service because she reminded me of\u00a0my\u00a0humble beginnings.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0come a long way as a profession if we can now say that youth,\u00a0on\u00a0a\u00a0reserve,\u00a0in remote Northern areas would give up their lunch money to get treatment. I\u2019d like to think that me being on reserve and participating in the community has contributed to that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>As a member of the CCA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chiro2024.thewire.dev\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>DEI\u00a0Task Force<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Dr. Ward hopes to\u00a0change perspectives\u00a0and\u00a0expand chiropractic\u2019s reach, especially for those\u00a0in remote areas\u00a0or\u00a0without\u00a0insurance.\u00a0Indigenous people no longer have chiropractic coverage under\u00a0the\u00a0Non-Insured\u00a0Health\u00a0Benefits (NIHB),\u00a0a federal\u00a0program providing\u00a0First Nations and Inuit peoples with\u00a0healthcare.\u00a0This prevents many from accessing care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>In June 2021, Dr. Ward was elected a CCA Board delegate representing Manitoba \u2013 the second Indigenous chiropractor to do so.\u00a0She believes that with ongoing DEI work\u00a0and representation on the board,\u00a0change will\u00a0happen\u00a0and future generations will not have to face the same barriers.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019d like to address systemic racist attitudes like the people who said I was destined for failure if I followed my dream,\u201d she says. \u201cI would like to address the high\u00a0school counselor who laughed and told me to\u00a0\u2018be realistic\u2019\u00a0when I told her I wanted to be a doctor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The CCA acknowledges\u00a0and mourns\u00a0the\u00a0215 Indigenous children\u00a0whose remains\u00a0were\u00a0found in unmarked graves on the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School.
